FLX races and scoring are all based on a point system. Unless otherwise specified by the race director or the race instructions, here are how points are gained or lost during a race.
Controls / Checkpoints
For each control/checkpoint a team finds, they get 1 point. So if a race has a total of 38 checkpoints, there are a total of 38 race points available.
Penalties
Penalty points are given for two different reasons, breaking race rules, or finishing the race after the finishing time.
Breaking Race Rules
If a team is caught breaking one of the race rules, like riding on a prohibited road, splitting up the teams, using a GPS, etc, they might get some penalty points. Usually race directors will go over this during the pre-race meeting. But expect at least one point per infraction.
Finish Time
Penalty points can be given if a team finishes after the official race finishing time. Unless otherwise stated, here are how the penalty points are given:
- 0.01 second after official race finish time = 1 penalty point
- 10.01 minutes after official race finish time = 2 penalty points
- 20.01 minutes after official race finish time = 3 penalty points
- 30.01 minutes after official race finish time = 4 penalty points and listed as OT (Over Time)
Teams that go into the OT category are automatically ranked below all teams that did not go into over time.
